What is Test and Tag?

Test and tag is the inspection and electrical testing of portable appliances — power leads, power boards, tools, computers, kitchen appliances and more. Each item gets a visual inspection, an electrical safety test, and a durable tag showing the test date, next test due, and who tested it.

Prevents shock & fire

Damaged leads and faulty appliances are a leading cause of workplace electric shock and electrical fires. Testing finds faults before they hurt someone.

Meets WHS obligations

Employers must ensure electrical equipment is safe. Testing to AS/NZS 3760 is the recognised way to demonstrate you've done exactly that.

Required by others

Insurers, landlords, principal contractors and site inductions frequently require current test tags and records before you can work or claim.

The Standard

AS/NZS 3760 — what it means for your business

AS/NZS 3760 is the Australian and New Zealand standard for the in-service safety inspection and testing of electrical equipment. It sets out what must be tested, how it's tested, and how often — based on the environment the equipment is used in.

Under NSW work health and safety law, a business must ensure its electrical equipment is safe to use. Following AS/NZS 3760 is the accepted way to demonstrate this — and it's mandatory on construction sites.

The good news: you don't need to know the standard. SydTag handles the whole process — testing, tagging, and a complete asset register you can hand to any auditor, insurer or site manager.

How It Works

Our simple 5-step process

A SydTag technician comes to you and works through every appliance and lead on site — methodically, with minimal disruption to your team.

1

Inspection

A visual check of each appliance and cable — spotting damaged insulation, tampering or wear and tear.

2

Testing

An electrical test of each item with a calibrated tester — reducing the risk of electrocution and fire.

3

Tagging

Passing items receive a durable tag with an item code, the test date, and when it's next due.

4

Fails

Failed items get a bright "Fail" tag and we let you know straight away so they can be removed from use.

5

Reporting

You receive a comprehensive report of every item's result — ready for your insurance and compliance records.

Also available: microwave radiation leak testing

We check your microwaves for radiation leaks — a quick add-on to any test and tag visit that keeps kitchen and lunchroom staff safe. Just tick the box on the quote form.

Test Intervals

How much does test and tag cost in Sydney?

With SydTag it's $6.50 per item for the first 100 items, $5.50 for items 101–200, $4.50 for items 201–400 and $3.50 for items 401–500, with a $175 minimum job charge. Over 500 items? We'll tailor a full quote.

How long does testing take?

Around 1–2 minutes per item. A typical 100-item office is done in a couple of hours, and we work around your staff so there's minimal disruption.

Do you need the power shut off?

No. Items are tested one at a time, and computers/servers can be scheduled so nothing important is interrupted.

What happens if an item fails?

It's tagged out of service and listed in your report with the reason, so you can repair or replace it. No surprise charges.

Do we get a report?

Yes — every job includes a full asset register: each item, its pass/fail result, and the next retest date. Perfect for audits, insurers and site managers.

Do you test microwaves for radiation leaks?

Yes — microwave radiation leak testing is a quick add-on to any test and tag visit. We check that the door seals aren't leaking radiation above safe limits, keeping kitchen and lunchroom staff safe. Tick "Microwaves to be leak tested" on the quote form.

Do you do after-hours or weekend visits?

Yes. Tell us in the quote form and we'll schedule around your business.

Is test and tag legally required?

WHS law requires you to ensure electrical equipment is safe; testing to AS/NZS 3760 is the accepted way to demonstrate it. On construction sites, 3-monthly testing is mandatory.
